Matthew McAlpine (b.1994) is an interdisciplinary artist who lives and works in Whadjuk Nyoongar Boodja (Perth, Western Australia). His practice aims to explore the complexities and problems of celebrating colonial history and legacies which whitewash history, deny Indigenous culture and rapidly degrade the environment.
While McAlpine draws upon a range of disciplines to interrogate these ideas, his practice is brought together by its poetic and material sensibilities.
McAlpine graduated from Curtin University with a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in 2016 and has been exhibiting regularly ever since. In 2021 he was awarded a residency at ECU culminating in a show held at Spectrum Gallery Space.
McAlpine’s solo Anthem at KolbuszSpace (2022) was critically very well received. McAlpine’s works are held in national and international collections.
