“Gauld is one of the few photographers who shoots on medium-format as well as now almost exclusively on large-format film. This way of working, arguably outdated, involves lugging a somewhat cumbersome camera around on a tripod, along with a film tent that ensures darkness when loading film sheets.
Gauld dedicates hours of standing, adjusting rise, fall, tilt, aperture, shutter, and film speed, to maybe, maybe capture a handful of intriguing moments – people, scenes, characters that appear staged but are entirely organic in composition. The results are captivating portraits that pit strange lushness and irresistible appeal with a distinct kind of ennui.” (Aimee Dodds, 2023)
Blair Gauld is self taught, having honed his skills through earlier work in commercial fashion photography and film. He now lives between London and Perth, where he continues to work and develop his practice.
His second solo exhibition at KS, SHOW, received strong critical attention, with multiple works acquired for significant institutional collections, including the St John of God Health Care Art Collection and the Murdoch University Collection.
Gauld is currently expanding his technical and conceptual approach through time spent with peers in London and Europe, with a particular focus on developing large and medium format works by hand. His next solo exhibition at KS is scheduled for early 2027.
