Tanya Linney’s new exhibition of paintings explores the collapse between painting and photography—where one medium bleeds into the other, unsettling distinctions between simulation and reality. Drawing on ideas from theorists like Jean Baudrillard and Roland Barthes, the works hover at the edge of recognition, asking what it means to register, interpret, and trust an image in a world now so overloaded with them.
At its core, the exhibition reflects Linney’s ongoing engagement with material experimentation and perceptual ambiguity. Through layering, removal and transformation, her surfaces become sites of tension—between presence and absence, memory and material. These are works twice removed: not only from reality, but from the conventions of representation itself. These paintings resist legibility, favouring the haunted space between construction and sensation.
Tanya Linney is a Perth-born, Sydney-based artist. After a successful international modelling career (1992–2009), she studied Textile Design at the International School of Colour and Design, then completed a Bachelor of Fine Arts (Painting) at the National Art School in Sydney (2017–2020). Linney has exhibited in Australia and internationally and has been a finalist in numerous prestigious art prizes.
