Croatian born artist Liliana Pasalic presents Field Notes on Matter, an ongoing body of pigment prints on paper developed over the past three years. Extending from her earlier work in experimental photography, first exhibited in a solo show in Zagreb, Croatia, these new works continue Pasalic’s investigation into the connections between humans and the world around them, from nature and the built environment to the metaphysical, the spiritual and the increasingly digital.
Approaching photography not as a documentarian, but as a painter, Pasalic brings together painting, photography, drawing, textiles, collage and sculpture in a process led by curiosity and experimentation. Ripped posters, urban decay, building sites, drawing and painting appear as symbols of human activity, while flora, fauna and natural materials point toward nature, spirit and interdependence. At other times, analogue and digital references explore the relationship between humans and machines, with physical processes offering a return to material presence, touch and direct experience. In Field Notes on Matter, physical materials such as fabric, stained glass, ice and water are used as filters, altering images by hand rather than screen and grounding the works in the tangible world.
Pasalic has lived in Zagreb, London and Adelaide, and now lives in Zurich. She has exhibited in solo and group exhibitions in Zagreb, Ljubljana, New York, Brussels, Vienna, Adelaide, Jerusalem and Canberra. Known for a practice that moves across painting, tapestry, design and photography, she continues to blur disciplines and challenge the boundaries between mediums.
