This body of work explores the interplay and interdependence of urban and natural environments. Symbols of local architectural decay — ripped posters, spray-painted doodles, LED lights — are layered with Australian native plants, coral reef flora and landscape, creating a dynamic dialogue between the manmade and the organic, the traditional and the unconventional. Through deep material experimentation, Pasalic creates works that blend abstraction and figuration, ranging from intimate to large scale. Each piece is built like a painting.
Liliana Pasalic’s approach to tapestry challenges the medium’s conventions. She subverts traditional tools and techniques by incorporating negative space, instinctive drawing with tapestry guns, dense wool textures, delicate layers of spray paint, and unexpected modes of display. The resulting works resist categorisation — oscillating between painting and sculpture — while reflecting on the fragile beauty of urban decay and its entanglement with nature. Layers of urban ruin obscure and reveal natural forms, echoing the experience of our immediate surroundings.
Pasalic’s practice draws on modernist legacies while simultaneously borrowing from, questioning, and reimagining the conventions of contemporary painting and sculpture. Emerging throughout is a meditation on interdependence and oneness, the idea that all things are connected. Her work reminds us that what happens to nature, or to another person, also happens to us.
Pasalic has exhibited in solo and group shows around the world, including in Zagreb, Ljubljana, New York, Brussels, Vienna, Adelaide, Jerusalem, and Canberra. This will be her first solo exhibition at KS.
